Ceiling Stain Came Back After Painting? Here Is Why

It was painted over, not sealed. Water stains carry minerals and tannins that bleed through ordinary paint within days. Two coats of ceiling white will not stop it.

Check the source first
If the stain is growing or feels damp, the leak is still active. Painting it is pointless until whatever caused it is fixed.
Seal, then paint
A stain-blocking primer goes over the mark first. Then the ceiling is painted, usually the whole ceiling, because spot-painting a ceiling almost always shows.
When the drywall has to go
If the ceiling is soft, sagging or crumbling, that section is cut out and replaced. See ceiling repair.
