Why Wall Patches Show Through Paint

The two causes
- Flashing: joint compound absorbs paint differently from the wall around it, so the patch looks duller or shinier. Primer fixes it.
- Shadowing: the patch is not flat. Light across the wall shows the edge. More finishing and sanding fixes it.
Why it happens in turnovers
Turnovers are rushed. A patch gets one coat of compound and a coat of paint on the same day. It looks fine until the first showing in afternoon light.
